Ideally there should be a 50/50 mix of green and brown matter. Green matter means things that are high in nitrogen like manure or grass clippings. Brown matter is things that use nitrogen to decompose and includes leaves, wood chips, sawdust and shredded newspaper. Too much nitrogen will cause the compost bin to smell bad. Too much brown matter will keep it from breaking down quickly. realistically it doesn’t need to be very precise. Just throw anything you have in it and it will break down. It helps to mix in a shovel full of dirt to provide some of the microbes that start the process.
